Can fan power get Zachary Quinto on SNL?

He’s smart, he’s handsome, he’s quick-witted and he’s a rising star. But those attributes might not be the only ones which get Heroes and Star Trek star Zachary Quinto installed as a future guest host of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, following his recent appearance in a Star Trek sketch with co-stars Chris Pine and Leonard Nimoy.
Fan power can get a lot done in the entertainment business – only recently this site has reported a successful campaign to get Chuck a second series on NBC, and would Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse have received another series off the back of its awful ratings if the fans weren’t relentlessly vocal?
ZQ has a band of loving followers, the snappily named ‘Sylar’s Army‘ or Sarmy for short. Led by mega fan Meaghan McBee they have opened up a petition to get the 31 year old actor onto screens as one of SNL’s guest hosts, who in the past have included Will Ferrell, Lindsay Lohan and Steve Martin. What started as a low-level campaign to get Quinto’s name on the table has now caught people’s imagination and the actor himself has been in contact to thank McBee and the Sarmy for their efforts. On his personal blog, ZQ said “Highlight of the trip to NY? Unsurprisingly, SNL. In the end, and I welcome all your support in this matter, the fact remains I must host Saturday Night Live iminently.”
Guest hosts on Saturday Night Live can crash and burn if they don’t fully invest in the spirit of the show and/or have a flair for comedy but Quinto has shown he can make funny as the gay best friend of Tori Spelling in her faux reality show So NoTORIous, and with an anarchic turn as a bisexual activist in2002′s Off Centre. He has also recently appeared in Robot Chicken and as himself on VH1′s Free Radio.
Meaghan McBee commented “I started the petition because he had asked his fans to help in any way possible, and I hope it will get the attention of NBC so they will see how much we all want this for him. It’s evident what a versatile actor he can be from his work in television, film, and theater; he’s quick to think on his feet, and his appearance on Weekend Update proved he would be awesome in a fast-paced comedy setting.”
So can fan power make this up and coming star’s dreams come true? Watch this space for more news, hell we’re on board!
