EXCLUSIVE: FOX picks up “Sons of Tucson”, Reaper officially over

Submitted by Kevin.Beaumont on May 13, 2009 – 12:02 amView Comments

We reported on March 12 that The CW had unofficially checked out of Reaper, and we’re sad to say it’s finally official – FOX have just told us they’ve officially picked up the Tyler Labine (Reaper’s “Sock”) comedy “Sons of Tucson” to series.

Tyler told End Of Show: “I don’t know what the CW was expecting taking a show off the air for ten months and then placing it against “idol” with no promotion but they were “disappointed” with our ratings to say the least. We drooped [sic]  into obscurity.”

Update: The Hollywood Reporter has discovered that in light of The CW handing Sunday nights back to affiliate stations, Reaper may return next season.  Current rumors suggest ABC Studios and the various affiliates are looking to keep the series alive without The CW.  Failing this there is talk of Reaper returning on cable next season.

First of all this is Tyler Labine. Second, you have no idea what you're talking about. I love Reaper, I love shooting the show and I have bent over backwards to promote the show. There are a lot of things that happened to Reaper along the way that indicated we were going to be cancelled a long time ago but I still gave it everything I've got. I'm an actor, that's what I do, when another opportunity comes along to keep acting, I take it. I am still attached to do Reaper if it comes back and part of me still really hopes it does. I would gladly go back for another season( even if you just want me killed ) It's hard to thrilled about doing a show that your own network doesn't believe in. I only told people not to hold their breath on MY facebook reaper page that I started because I initially put up a much more positive post and got told by the network heads to take it down and that i had no right or permission to speak on a 3rd season. I fucking hate small minded people like you who have no clue what it's like to be in this industry but are so quick to spit venom at us. Also, yeah, I am very aware that the story line with Eriko was not great, I have no control over what gets written for me. I just have to do the best with what they give me. In short, if Reaper comes back, I'm there with bells on (sorry) and if it doesn't I made a smart move and worked hard to get another job in the meantime. If that makes me some kind of asshole in your eyes I'm confused. Don't damn my new show just because you're not happy with the way the CW has handled all this. It has nothing to do with me.

As an actor, you go where the work is. It makes perfect sense to take a pilot offer if you are unsure if your current gig is going to come back.

I really hope Reaper comes back not only because it's a great show but the more series we have filming in Vancouver, the better .

    Tyler -
    Bro. You rock the Reaper.

Best of luck in whatever the future holds.

I kind of agree with everyone here (I know that seems impossible). I'm not sure we can totally go by Tyler's comments, since he's had a vested interest in having his own show from the start. None of this has stopped us from fighting for the show, though--you never know! The campaign continues at reaperdmv.
  • I hated that too, but that doesn't mean it's his fault. Don't blame the actor for the writers and producers (more the producers in this case) actions. Giving up hope is probably the smart thing to do, then you won't be hurt when it does happen, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. It's the CW that wanted Reaper to fail. They've never cared about the series, they only care about their adaptations and spin-offs. It's not the most original network out there, and if they cancel Reaper it'll prove they don't care about quality content.

Alfred, please don't tell people to not state opinions as facts when you basically are in your comments. If had just prefaced things with an "I thought" or something similar than I wouldn't be making this argument. But to say that a storyline was the worst fiasco of the season in the way you said it is stating it as fact. I'm sure there are people out there who liked the plotline, so at least mention that it was you who thought it was a poor story, and not as if its a absolute among all Reaper fans.
  • If that's what they told Tyler, then how on Earth is the CW taken seriously by the industry? Reaper's live numbers have been beating 90210 almost since the show came back, and Privileged's numbers are even worse. Yet Privileged is considered by the CW to be successful enough for a midseason pickup, yet Reaper's considered a disappointment?

I'll wait for the CW upfronts next week on May 21st. Personally, I'm hoping for a summer pickup, which would probably let Tyler do both shows. Reaper fans: Remember, last year Reaper was declared dead too, but came back at the last minute to get a renewal. If anyone wants to still help, snail and email addresses, petitions, etc., are organized here: http://community.livejournal.com/reaperdmv/3744...

Ah, and I forgot, don't say Reaper is officially over until The CW says so. I'm tired of people that state their own opinions as facts.
  • Alfred Woden
Tyler is just sore because the relationship between his character (Sock) and Eriko Tamura's (Kristen, Sock's step-sister) was the biggest fiasco the series had to face this season.

And you can obviously tell by his behavior that he wanted this to happen. He even told everyone at Reaper's Facebook group that they should just give up hope.

I'm really expecting that Reaper gets a last-minute renewal so they can kill his character right on the first new episode. And if Reaper is beyond salvation, I'm really expecting Sons of Tucson to fail miserably to serve him right.
