EXCLUSIVE: Reaper quietly cancelled by The CW

Submitted by Kevin.Beaumont on March 12, 2009 – 7:17 amView Comments
Reaper brings the pretty.

Reaper brings the pretty.

We covered this on the radio show last night: “REAPER” is done.  The CW have opted not to pick up the casts options.  Tyler Labine (Reaper’s “Sock”) has been cast as the lead in FOX’s upcoming “Sons of Tuscon” pilot.  Whilst that show may not get picked up, the point is this: your cast shouldn’t even be able to be cast elsewhere if you’ve got them signed to a series.  Picking up cast options is pretty much chump change, so it’s sign The CW had no expectation of the show returning before the show even started airing.

Sorry, Reaper fans.  I liked your little show that shoulda coulda.  The remaining episodes are still planned to be aired by The CW, who say they “support the show”.  Funny way of showing it.

Actually I think FOX should cancel American Idol so shows like Reaper will have a better chance of getting viewers because reality tv is what is killing great scripted shows.

Under no circumstances should they cancel Reaper!!! I love that show. Benny and Sock and Sam...god, I would weep at the loss of such comedic talent...I am so tired of CSI, Law and Order, Supernatural and Smallville, cancel them all, I get tired of so much seriousness...I love to sit down on Tuesday nights and laugh my a** off. Here is to hoping that the TV gods do not forsake us entirely.
  • Fans are trying to get the message to the CW that they want a third season. You can find info on that here: http://axiomsedge-scifi.com/wordpress/save-my-s...

God i hope reaper isn't canceled it's one of the best shows on TV
i love that show! it gets better all the time
the cast is awesome! and so is the storyline!
i just wish jessica stroup would come back!
i never miss an episode and i own season one on dvd.
  • Hey Tyler. I love Reaper, and I'll watch it until the very end (which I hope isn't for many more seasons). I was there since the beginning (in person at Kevin Smith's Reaper intro at ComicCon 07) and you were standout then and you're standout now. I hope to catch that new Fox show too, as you're a dude who will bring the funny.
  • Tyler Labine
This is TY. Reaper is far from cancelled. I am indeed just trying to secure work for the future if the show IS cancelled. Tuscon has taken what's called "second position" status. See comment above or below. The fact that CBS and Fox offered me pilots is not a good indication that we will be returning but nonetheless it is not done yet. I don't know what the CW was expecting taking a show off the air for ten months and then placing it against "idol" with no promotion but they were "disappointed" with our ratings to say the least. We drooped into obscurity. Oh well, at least I have a new pilot and a development deal with FOX in case it doesn't work out. Keep watching because the season does get really good. Thanks guys. TY Labine. aka SOCK.

That's not true at all. Lots of actors from struggling shows sign on to new pilots in the Spring with a contigency clause in the contract which states their obligation to the existing series takes priority to the new one. This means that if Reaper is renewed Labine will obviously depart the Tucson project and that pilot will be reshot. It's a risky choice for the second party in the situation and admittedly it's rarely done with actors whose current series are not considered "unlikely to return." But "unlikely to return" is not officially canceled. This is no news at all.

Cancel Supernatural??? WTF are you smoking???

SN is the best show on TV right now, and I must admit, better than Reaper (although I do love my Reaper).

If you meant Smallville, I'll cut you a break...
  • Adrian Veidt
Why oh why they can't quietly cancel supernatural?
  • PJ
Yes, I'm going to have to call you out on this one too unless you have some proof from an official CW source that the show has been cancelled. A pilot role that can be shot during the hiatus is no such thing.
  • What source are you basing this on? Tyler's new job? He's allowed to work while on hiatus for Reaper, and there's nothing wrong with him working on a pilot. Most pilots aren't picked up - it's like temp work in the industry. Tyler certainly has a history of working on them. And if by any chance it *is* picked up, Tyler's Reaper contract still takes priority. So if Reaper gets renewed, Tyler would certainly be back. He'd either have to give up SOT or work BOTH jobs.

Not to mention Tyler's specifically said to Bullz-Eye that it's just him looking for work in the hiatus. "Lots of time to fill." Reaper wouldn't start filming for 5 months. That's a lot of time for an actor to just be sitting around on his ass.
