FOX saves Terminator at the last moment

Submitted by Kevin.Beaumont on October 20, 2008 – 7:42 pmView Comments

FBR have stepped up to the plate and ordered 9 more episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles be put into production, in a move which makes End Of Show look like a bunch of idiots and which makes them look rather cool.

Terminator sank heavily in the ratings this season, slipping to numbers in key demographics which have almost universally lead to cancellation on FOX with previous shows.  It looked extremely unlikely FOX would order more episodes given the ratings, however they decided to take a new direction at the last minute — “Terminator” was about to start shooting it’s final episode — and stick with the show despite the slipping audience.

Preston Beckman, Fox’s exec VP of strategic program planning and research, said the network is going to stick with Terminator on air through to Christmas.

“These are niche shows” he said.  Because “Terminator” has continuing story arcs that aren’t close-ended episode-to-episode, it makes it difficult to recruit new viewers.

Asked to confirm if this means Dollhouse will lose the slot it was due to take from Terminator in January, a Fox spokeswoman told us “We haven’t announced our midseason schedule yet…  but Dollhouse is currently in production and for a premiere in ’09″.

We’ll be covering what caused the swing towards Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles favour in depth in a few days time.  It’s a bold move by FOX.

Also, if the issue is getting new viewers to understand the story line, FOX should advertise that they can watch the previous ones at their leasure in Hulu.com. Not many people know that yet.

Me too, I can't keep up with it on TV but have watched the whole new season on Hulu.com. I used to search for and download the episode right after it was aired, but now I watch it in Hulu, although the quality could be better. I am buying the season DVD anyway.

I think it is important to note that there is a new Terminator movie on the way. While it will probably be unrelated to the other movies and to this series, its success is based on the success of the franchise to a point. Warner probably had some say in the success of the FOX venture.. What do you all think?

I am not sure how the networks go about detailing viewer demographics and the like, as I have never ever been asked to be a Nielsen rater and have never known anybody that has, but I can tell you that I know of several families that watch this series. I cannot put an exact number on viewers that I am aware of but I can tell you exactly how many would have been upset had this show been cancelled. That answer is, ALL OF US!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Fox for being bold enough to continue the series, I do agree that Monday's time slot may make the ratings a little less than acceptable and may make a switch to a different day and time slot worth checking into. This household does not watch the NFL, but you would not know that since we are not part of Nielsen. Someone has to know Nielsen cannot always be correct!!!!!!!!
    Thanks

I completely agree with albert. I started watching this show thanks to its availability online since I'm too busy to schedule my life around a tv show. Hulu.com has helped me keep up to date with many tv shows I would nver have been able to watch.

The open-ended shows should not be as much as a deterrent for new watchers (like myself) thans to websites like HULU.com. I have watched every episode they have available and have found the show quite captivating. Thanks to series being available online, I have watched more television this year than the past five years put together.

Why don't they move the time slot? The World Series will be in the way and so is Monday night football. I think the time slot is very important here. Absolutely love the show, and hope it stays on air. I compare it to Fox's X-File's. :)
