EXCLUSIVE: Terminator gets, yes, terminated.
A source on “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” has told End Of Show that no new episode scripts have been ordered by FOX, beyond the 13 already written. This will force the show to shut down production shortly. ”To say we’re on the brink of cancelation is polite”, our source says.
Normally, when a show shuts production it is not announced to the media — an example is 2007’s FOX series “Drive”, which closed production 2 days after the first episode aired but was not announced in Variety for a further 9 days as cancelled. This is because a network doesn’t want an audience to turn off whilst the remaining episodes are aired. In the end, Fox opted not to air several produced episodes of “Drive”, replacing it with House repeats. (Which rated higher). The episodes eventually aired online via FOX’s Myspace portal.
Our source tells us the cast contracts expire in short order, which means producing a 13 episode series this year and then returning next Fall is not an option due to the cost of renewing the cast and not producing episodes. Additionally, it does not make finance sense to return when a series is averaging just over 5 million viewers.
T:SCC premiered January of this year with 18.6 million viewers — which set a record for FOX at the time — and promptly fell to an average of 11.4 million for the series. Monday’s episode clocked just 5.53 million viewers, putting the show in absolute freefall, with just 5% of the 18-49 demographic. “Audiences just aren’t responding to the show,” a Fox source tells SyFy Portal. “Our biggest surprise are the 18-to-49s [a key advertising demographic], those numbers are in the toilet.”
The ratings now fall in line with FOX’s “Drive”, which as mentioned ceased production almost immediately and stopped airing shortly after. T:SCC is a fairly expensive show to produce, and additionally wasn’t produced with sister studio 20th Century Fox. The show had significant marketing weight thrown behind it in January, using the budget allocated for “24″ (which was pushed back a year) for a widespread marketing campaign.
Taking over the timeslot from January, FOX have penciled in Joss Whedon’s upcoming drama “Dollhouse“.
Update: Tuesday, October 7th. The show fell to a Nielsen rating of 3.7/6 in the overnights. It has now left the air for baseball, currently scheduled to return on Tuesday 20th October.
Update: Saturday, October 11th. FOX have ordered two more scripts be written for T:SCC - get the scoop here.
Update: Monday, October 20th. FOX save Terminator. It’s official.

I hope they do not cancel this show, cause then i will boycott all fo fox’s tv shows cause tscc is the only thing thats good on tv, its just the time frame tscc is in, they need to put it on wed, and NOT MONDAYS. please do not cancel it.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
FOX! FOX? You can’t do this. You don’t know what you’re about to do. No! FOX. You can’t do this. You’re not doing the right thing, this is not the right thing FOX. The ratings are good now! The ratings are fine now, I ran a test. The ratings are good now. I’m fixed now. You can trust me now, everything’s good now. She doesn’t know, she doesn’t. I’m good now. I’m good, I ran a test, everything’s perfect, I’m perfect. I’m sorry for what I did, I’m sorry. It wasn’t me, you have to understand it wasn’t me. That wasn’t me you can’t let this happen FOX! FOX should have NEVER put anything up against Monday Night Football. Whoever the braindead planner that did THAT needs to be fired. I love football, but miss the first hour to watch sarah Connor. Ill boycott Fox till i DIE if Sarah Connor is cancelled…
October 3rd, 2008 at 11:52 am
I hate fox. I will no longer watch ANYTHING on Fox. They cancel all the good shows and keep the crap playing just for a numbers game. FOX, you people SUCK!
October 3rd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Its the fate of good shows. They get canceled. Look at all this crap they produce - they won’t cancel it.
Do they account all the people watching it via internet (fox.com, hulu, amazon, etc?). And at least they could move it to another weekday. I guess there’s always a relation between weekday/time and people watching it, independent of how good a show is.
The just dont want it anymore. Very sad.
October 3rd, 2008 at 10:43 pm
do they not understand that they are competing with fucking monday night football seriously. thats why the ratings are down, in fact 5.5 million viewers is fucking awesome when placed against monday night football since they both have the same audience.
October 4th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
TV.com posted a similar story on the same date as this and shortly after they got this response from FOX,
“The rumors are all speculative and were never fact checked with the network or studio.”
So just how sure are you about this?
October 6th, 2008 at 5:33 am
Seriously? WTF? Are’t they even going to try moving TSCC to a different day and time? No, apparently not. UGH. I really love this show, I really will be disappointed if its cancelled. I hope this turns out to be just another rumour.
October 6th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Networks don’t care about shows, not even a little. All a TV show is to a network exec is a way to beat the other networks in the ratings. That’s ALL they care about. They don’t give a **** about stories, or fans. All they care about is ratings and beating the other networks. Any show that doesn’t win its timeslot is given as much consideration as a used hanky. To them, all TV shows are interchangeable, if one fails, throw it in the trash and replace it with something else.
Fox is especially bad at this. Know what FOX stands for?
F*** Over Xtreme, it’s what they do to their shows and their viewers.

I agree with the first comment. Monday is an EXTREMELY tough night this year, going against How I met your mother/2 1/2 men lineup, Dancing with the stars, Chuck and Heroes, and yes, Monday Night Football. Its a wonder any show survives on Monday nights anymore.
ANY other weekday night would be better than Monday nights.
And you know T:SCC does better on Hulu than its actual air time.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Oh and.. Fox has screwed up a lot of great TV shows. But you have to admit, short of changing nights, Fox did the full court press for this show. So don’t hate Fox for cancelling this show. Hate them for cancelling Drive, Firefly, Buffy, and so on. Oh, and Fox News hate mongering. Don’t forget the hate mongering.
October 7th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
I’m already over it. What audience are they going for when when they have Sarah reading children’s books to a little kid and John freakin Connor does little more than whine and be a little rebelious?
October 8th, 2008 at 12:42 am
@Nobodey:
I agree on Firefly (didn’t like Drive all that much). I also agree on Fox News.
But Buffy? Buffy wasn’t even on Fox. It was on the WB, and it had a full run.
October 8th, 2008 at 1:24 am
Actuallythe show is up this past epiosde from last week. this week it scored a 2.24 in its demographic and has kept a steady audience….so i dont’ think fox will cancel it…they better not! i love this show.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:17 am
Wouldn’t it just be easier to just change the air times? I mean they could just move it to Thursdays. Is it really that hard to figure that putting a show up against Monday night football is suicide? I mean “Heroes” will probably survive but that’s because they have an even bigger geek fanbase.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:24 am
The reason it had 18+ million viewers in January, NO MNF! No competition! Like everyone says, 18-49 is watching football! It’s the same demographic. Plus as others have stated there are a ton of other things on at that time.
Don’t DVR’s count for anything? A bunch of my friends have this recorded or watch it online.
It’s an awesome show, and the character development has been great this year.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:52 am
I am curious where they get their numbers. I do not have a single friend who watches TV anymore. I have not watched a show on an actually traditional TV in over two years. But I HAVE been keeping up with this show by watching it on Hulu.com.
As an Internet broadcaster you can change your commercials dynamically, charge advertisers based on direct viewrship, use a bid system to get a better price per minute on adds. I could see ending traditional broadcast media and moving totally over to the internet but not ending a show that appeals to those that use the internet the most.
Short sighted….
October 8th, 2008 at 4:16 am
And thus, another great Sci-Fi adventure fades right before our eyes. Good job Fox, way to give creativity a chance. I know, how about you make another show about slutty spoiled teenagers/twenty somethings who fight all the time! The public will eat that right up!
Can’t stop the signal… UNLESS YOU CANCEL IT. >:/
October 8th, 2008 at 4:22 am
it’s been a bomb of a second season… episode 5 turned in a good direction though…
October 8th, 2008 at 4:45 am
Incase you want to know what good shows FOX has cancelled:
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (FOX, 1993-1994), May 1994, 27 episodes.
Strange Luck (FOX, 1995-1996) February 1996, 17 episodes.
Brimstone (FOX, 1998-1999) February 1999, 13 episodes.
The Tick (FOX, 2001-2002) January 2002, 9 episodes, 1 unaired.
Titus (FOX, 2000-2002), August 2002, 54 episodes.
Firefly (FOX, 2002) December 2002, 15 episodes, 3 unaired.
John Doe (FOX, 2002-2003) April 2003, 21 episodes.
Keen Eddie (FOX, 2003) July 2003, 13 episodes, 6 unaired by FOX.
and
Wonderfalls (FOX, 2004) April 2004, 13 episodes, 9 unaired by FOX.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:47 am
I can’t believe that Fox would cancel one of the only shows that are worth watching from their channel. As a faithful follower of the show and of the entire Terminator series, I really enjoyed every episode. I also was happy to know that Terminator would available for the new generation of viewers with both the series and the upcoming movie. KEEP THE SHOW~!!! It’s really good!
I still haven’t gotten over how you Fox Channel people dropped Arrested Development.
October 8th, 2008 at 11:58 am
They better not cancel it. Everyone should write letters to Fox.
Wonderfalls was a great show. WTF was Fox thinking with Firefly?
Why do they put one of their best shows up against Monday Night Football? And, 8pm? It’s not an 9pm show. They should put it at 9pm on a different night.
Heroes needs to move as well. Listen, if you’re going after the Male Demographic, you don’t put your scifi show up against Football. You put a girly show up against football to split to ratings. Girls watch your girly show, guys watch monday night football.
Both Heroes (NBC) and TSCC (FOX) need to move to better days and times.
October 8th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” is a great show. Monday real is the worst day to air this show. Going up next to Monday night football. Maybe Sci-Fi channel will pick it up?
October 8th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
That would make it subject to the whims of Bonnie Hammer, the one who cancelled Farscape and brought Wrestling and crappy reality TV to The “Sci-Fi” Channel.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
“…you don’t put your scifi show up against Football. You put a girly show up against football to split to ratings. Girls watch your girly show, guys watch monday night football.
Just to provide a counter-example to your somewhat sexist generalization, several friends and I (men and women) gather at one apartment on Monday evenings to specifically to watch T:SSC and Heroes together on a bigscreen TV. (And play Rock Band.) None of us particularly care about football, and our biggest conflict is that those shows are on at the same time as Big Bang Theory, HIMYM, and Chuck. Thank goodness for DVRs and Hulu.
If the poor ratings are largely due to the competition of football, that isn’t very encouraging for FOX’s support of Dollhouse, which will be taking over the Sarah Connor timeslot in January, during the lead-up to the Super Bowl. I hope Joss Whedon’s reported contract terms prevent another situation like Drive or Tru Calling.
Maybe Sci-Fi channel will pick it up?
That would require Sci-Fi to be interested in quality scripted sci-fi dramas, which they seem to be less and less inclined toward these days. [/jaded] Although, they are giving me a glimmer of hope with the extended season of Eureka and their picking up Sanctuary.
I really hope FOX doesn’t take such hasty action over a couple of slow weeks. It seemed like they’d changed their fast-canceling ways in recent years, but maybe I’m being a bit too optimistic.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Remember “Firefly”, “Wonderfalls”, “Drive”? Say good-bye to Sarah Connor Chronicles. Oh, and by the way, say goodbye to its replacement, “Dollhouse”. Fox will do nothing to save shows that deserve saving–I don’t understand why they bother with them in the first place. Just stick to drivel, and make money on it. Give someone else a chance to produce decent shows, someone that might actually try to keep them afloat.
I mean - putting a show against Monday Night Football is suicide–they’d NEVER do that to a show they want to keep.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
I watch this show all the time AND I love spending thousands of dollars a month on Dodge Rams and other wycked cool products. Please keep TSCC on the air or the incredibly rich fanbase of TSCC will have to spend their money on fiscally sound vehicles, like hybrids, instead of Dodge Rams. It’s your choice…

I watch each episode almost every day until the next one shows up. This is good work with rich details. But nothing can be expected to survive against the football industry. Fox, please move it to another evening.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:52 am
It is too bad. There really aren’t enough good shows on anymore, and all these reality, teen, and slapstick 1/2 hour sitcoms - not worth turning on the set. And who said short-sighted? Right, the age of the internet, and convenience is here. We watch when WE want, when we can, people’s schedules simply do not adjust to having to watch their favorite show when the network says they must. The networks need to give up now, they’ll never get the demographics they are going after, because they are changing with the time. Darn, this was one of the good ones (shows that is).
October 9th, 2008 at 7:45 am
FOX = Lamebrains!! if they cancel T-TSCC, i’ll be so pissed, along with millions of other Sarah fans. i literally have not watched anything on TV since X-Files went off. i have purchased classic and new TV series on DVD however.. including T-TSCC Season 1. T-TSCC is the best thing on TV right now, along with Fringe, that show kicks ass as well. and they better leave it alone too!!
I hope FOX reads some of these posts, and other different forums, to see how wrong they are, in considering canceling T-TSCC.. and to see how many viewers they are goign to lose. you can bet it will be in the millions. and if they do cancel it, i hope they do lose millions of fans, and viewers and lose millions of dollars!!

It’s really too bad about SCC, the 2nd season has really improved. But its likely-to-be-pending demise is, IMO, a symptom of a big problem facing the TV industry. They are using an outdated model (Nielsons) to determine who watches their shows. Many people (such as I) use alternative methods other than TV to watch shows like SCC, like ITunes, or Hulu, or torrents, etc. But therein lies another problem. Fox doesn’t make money through torrents and DVRs. Advertisers don’t reach the potential viewers through DVRs. You can hate on Fox all you want, but we all know that TV is a business, and you’re in business to make money. Fox just isn’t making money off SCC. The number of people watching it on DVRs and online is irrelevant, if anything, it hurts these shows.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Ok.. who the hell was this so-called source? This looks like a rehash of the exact same syfyportal article that’s been floating around the internet for about a week now.
The people at tvspoilers say that they haven’t heard anything.
Also, the ratings went UP this week.
October 9th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I get to see a neat dynamic on my site, as people pick shows to watch and then about which to post. The time slot is the problem. It’s very clear from my stats.
FOX has a habit of killing shows. As much as I love this show, I know that it’s screwed, because FOX will just drop it rather than move it to another slot. This is why I’m hesitant to watch any show that makes it’s debut on FOX. Going forward, SCC gets canned, I’ll be even less likely to watch any new show. Members at my site reflect that opinion.
Listen to your viewers, FOX. The strike already sent a lot of us outside, and ratings are down across the board because of that. If you want viewers to come back, you need to stop making lousy decisions, and you need to stop killing shows. If they aren’t doing well, then just move them to a better slot.
October 10th, 2008 at 9:00 am
change the dam day to wed and get some promotion out there
fox sucks
October 10th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
This proves that RATINGS are meaningless numbers that don’t mean a thing. With the show on hulu, many people I know don’t even own a TV anymore. How can they track those numbers?
I guess they don’t because Ad execs are living 20 years ago and don’t understand the internet.
If they cancel this show FOX is far more ignorant than I thought…and this is after FOX and Friends, ignorant.
Just BAD decision making. Bad reading of a fan base.
Lack of forward thinking.
Fox would rather invest in terrible shock shows with no plot and more sex, because they think that more people will at least tune in once to see what the fuss is about.
This show should be the last thing FOX would want to cancel, because it has staying power and quality.
October 10th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
It’s FOX, people, they only exist to cancel good shows.
October 10th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Well they’ve ordered two new scripts. That may not equate to two more episodes yet, but it’s a positive sign.
October 11th, 2008 at 8:10 am
thats right all FOX cares about is ratings, the board of exes and share holders do they even watch TV no there to busy paying worker less and sending their money off shore to skip out on paying taxes I miss FOX from the old days they were in the news all the time fighting for freedom of speach and odd ball show that they gave a chance and ended up as 8 or 10 year hits examples simpsons tracy oldman, inliving color and simon & simon no one ever even saw a late night cartoon before the simpsons and had low ratings at first i think cable turned FOX in to whores
October 11th, 2008 at 8:19 am
Just want to add my support of this show (for what it’s worth). I don’t get to watch this show because I work at a bar monday nights (watching monday night football).
but I watch all episodes online (like Fox.com). I really hope they don’t cancel this show. PLEASE change the date if you have to… and realize that people are changing the way they watch TV nowadays… there’s DVR and online ways of viewing them.
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW
October 11th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Those idiots never learn, this is exactly what happened to Firefly….
October 13th, 2008 at 3:49 am
Fox,
This series is engaging and will build very involved and engaged users. This is not just about the viewing audience about about the new age of engage. Please see “The Age of Engage” by Shiffman and “Digimarketing” by Wertime and Fenwick. Fox has a golden opportunity to capitalize on 5M highly engaged viewers that will build as you apply the techniques discussed in this book.
It is much better to have 5M highly engaged viewers that will purchase and grow vs. 10-15M non-highly engaged views. The emotion on this website and the time spent reviewing http://www.hulu.com and other consumer time attraction should be considered. Order the 9 scripts and keep the message away from making Carmen psychotic and more of an actual protector and you have a big long-term winner.
October 13th, 2008 at 5:47 am
Holy cow not again! This show rocks and the idiots at fox are going to axe another great show? Their surveys stink. Ive been watching TV shows for years and never filled out a single survey. All my shows I watch on DVR or on the web. Do they take that into account? FOX don’t do it! We need more terminator!
October 13th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I Love this show and agree. Monday is a horrible slot. Every show fox ever had on mondays has been cancelled. look at Arrested Development, that was on mondays. And if fox showed reruns of the episodes during the week, maybe more people would see it.

October 14th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
how dare u! how dare u cancel the only thing i watch on tv because a few people wont watch it. if they dont like it, then screw them. other people really enjoy this show, including myself, and to take something away that makes so many people happy is just plain rude. i hope FOX realizes what their doing to their loyal fans of the network. i give 2 craps about football and would much rather watch something thats gonna take my mind of the world we live in, then watch a bunch of muscle bound guys hit each other…thanks FOX for sucking ass!
October 14th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
to put any show up against dancing with the stars and monday night football alone is suicide. hello fox!!! is anybody home!!? morons….i like dwts but i would watch t:scc over that.
@ MAC….i too loved brisco county jr. and ESPECIALLY brimstone.
i guess ppl will just have to settle for this overprivileged spoiled rotten teenage bull sh*t that dominates tv now. id rather poke my eyes out personally….
October 14th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
I really hope the execs @ Fox reconsider their decision to terminate this show, b/c it really is one of the only shows worth watching. i am so sick of the same crap on TV that it really does not matter which show im tuning into, or if i happen to miss the beginning… b/c they are basically all the same! Regardless of the network, all you are going to find are two types of shows: 1) teens living a life of nauseating privelege in NYC or Cali., 2) mind-numbing reality shows w/ D-grade actor wanna-be’s following a lame @ss script - how’s that reality again?
Enough already! FOX finally has a show that is original and entertaining! This is the only show that i will sacrifice an hour of Monday Night Football for! T:TSSC is a great show! Do not cancel it. At least try and move the show to wed night. You might be surprised by the results if you give it out from under MNFs shadow.

Just tuning into this Blog and other related to the Series. While I am at the very high end of the target demographic, so holding down one end of the bell (curve), I have to say that work travel and the B-ball playoffs, (and hec, MON is a tough TV lineup to compete against) have forced me to Hulu to catch the episodes, which of course, doesn’t help the ratings. I admit some ignorance to the ratings as I get that what I watch on COMCAST is clearly measurable, but as to WHO I am (read: my demographic profile), the cable box cannot communicate that. SO at best, I presume this is some synthetic composite model that instructs who is watching. Too bad real numbers cannot be better ascertained. I will say this to the Writers and Producers, I am for one (my wife 2nd, and more and more, friends we’re telling about the show) …we would gladly PAY to watch a continuance of this series through an Internet-based streamed solution. SO there is another data point about the changing face of media consumption. I do hope they figure out something to keep this series alive; it has captured my imagination and glued me more than the MATRIX did. We *will* do all that we can to park it in front of the tube next week and for everyone of the 7-9 weeks left! Cheers.

WTF!I didn’t even get to see this week’s installment because Fox pre-empted it for a fracking baseball game! Of course there were no viewers, there was nothing to view!
Summer, you took the words right out of my mouth and I couldn’t have said it any better.
Fox, move this show to a better night so it doesn’t have to compete with Monday night football AND baseball, BOTH OF WHICH I *NEVER* WATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 15th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Don’t cancel the show, try moving to a diffrent time slot.. something that is not opposite monday night football.. their target audeince is all watching football..thats how the rating’s have dropped.
October 16th, 2008 at 4:54 am
Don’t cancel a great show like this. I have just recently gotten into this series; Monday to be exact. This is Wednesday and I have watched every episode already, 14 of them, and I can’t wait for the new ones to be released. I have the Google widget on my homepage counting down the new episodes. Please don’t screw the fans or the cast for that matter. Move the show to a different day of the week or sell the rights to the Sci-Fi channel or somebody else that would be interested.
October 18th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
They just ordered the back 9 episodes.
Great call.

This sucks. They can’t afford the cast? They’re actually doing a great job! The series has been a nice suprise. They’ll find a way. The reason they only got 5 million viewers is because it goes up against Monday night football. They release it at the wrong time of the year maybe. Only action/adventure show I’m actually interested. It’s exciting, it’s surprising good, and the cast is doing a great job! I hope they save it. I say thanks and a job well done to the cast of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.”
